WorthRepeatingLogoEditor’s note: Seattle is currently losing out on good police recruits by disallowing cannabis use among job applicants for at least one year. We need police who are like the people they protect and serve — and 74 percent of Seattle voters support legal marijuana. And with the Seattle Police Department cited by the federal Justice Department for habitual use of excessive force, who can dispute that we need cops who are little less inclined to beat people down?

But according to Assistant Chief Jim Pugel, disqualifying current marijuana users from the police force serves to “see if the person can follow rules set by society” (even though it’s now legal in Washington society). Despite the SPD’s promise to “reevaluate other marijuana-related hiring policies,” Pugel said there are no plans to further relax the department’s pot ban.

Seattle activist Ben Livingston has started an online petition, LetCopsUsePot.com. “Among the reasons to let cops use pot: Seattle could otherwise lose out on cannabis users who would be excellent, qualified officers and — quite seriously — pot after work could make for mellower cops,” Livingston wrote in The Stranger.

Ron Marczyk’s article below — the original version of which was penned last October — is even more current and topical than when he first wrote it five months ago. ~ Steve Elliott

……

“Nationally, twice as many cops – about 300 annually – commit suicide as are killed in the line of duty, according to a study by the National Association of Police Chiefs”

Alcoholism and suicide kill more police officers than on the job violence!

Could substituting marijuana for alcohol use greatly decrease rates of burnout, alcoholism, suicide, depression and divorce, domestic violence and PTSD among the nation’s police officers? Police have, on average, life expectancies 10 years less than the average person; they also kill themselves at higher rates than the average American.

Marijuana is an exit drug for alcohol abuse and is also “an anti-suicide medicine.”

So why not allow police officers to use the safest recreational drug known to science?

Police officers, both male and female, have a high rate of alcoholism and a much higher rate of suicide due to having the most stressful job in the world. Marijuana may be the medicine that just may help our nation’s finest to cope.

High job stress + shift work + marital/family difficulty + guns + alcohol-induced aggressive behavior = increased probability of suicide.

Consider the following study from states that legalized marijuana vs. marijuana prohibition states: The states with legalized marijuana saw their suicide rates fall for young men!

“Data from states where medical marijuana is legal, looking back three years prior to legalization, the year of legalization (year zero) and three years’ post-legalization was compared against data on suicide rates in prohibition states.”

The data showed “an 11 percent reduction in the suicide rate of 20- through 29-year-old males; and a 9 percent reduction in the suicide rate of 30- through 39-year-old males.”

“We conclude that the legalization of medical marijuana leads to an improvement in the psychological well being of young adult males an improvement that is reflected in fewer suicides.” (Medical Marijuana Laws and Suicide/ Jan 2012)

• Marijuana improves the “psychological well being” of young adult males and saves lives!

• Marijuana’s major actions are that of an anti-depressant, anti-anxiety and anti-anger medication.

• Marijuana reduces alcohol consumption in this age population.

Want to know a secret about the hidden lives of police officers and those federal agents who raid cannabis clinics? When they take off the uniform, off duty they are just like me and you: they dig getting lifted!

Off duty these protectors of society drink a lot of alcohol, a real lot! Frequently binge drink together, and dig getting drunk… but would love to substitute marijuana in place of alcohol if only it were legal for them to do so!

So if police officers were given a legal option to smoke cannabis recreationally in place of drinking alcohol, would they take it?

See: 420: Thoughts on Pot vs. Alcohol from a Former Police Chief

Hold on guys! A marijuana revolution is brewing, and boy, is the DEA going to be in for a political reality check!

When recreational marijuana became legal in Oregon and Washington, it becomes legal for every adult in those states to use — police officers included.

Yes, police departments have internal rules governing off-duty behavior and intoxication, but once marijuana becomes legal for all citizens, these restrictive rules will not have a logical basis to exist or a legal reason to stand up against a court challenge.

Secretly many law enforcement agents would love to smoke marijuana off-duty for recreation but are unable to voice their true feelings about this subject due to the fear of losing their jobs by challenging the entrenched political anti-marijuana dogma that exists, so many police officers have to pretend they support current marijuana laws.

But many secretly believe the current marijuana laws are stupid as in…

Why am I locking up somebody for something I used to do a lot, enjoyed greatly and wish I could do now?

Screen Shot 2012-10-12 at 3.54.51 PMSo the problem in a nutshell is: being a police officer is the most stressful job in the world, police officers need to decompress off duty, and, being normal humans, some choose the help of a drug to come down. The idea of drug-free society is fantasy, so in the real world the best harm reduction strategy for police officers would be to replace alcohol with the safest drug known to science.

Could recreational cannabis use act as a superior anti-anxiety agent, replacing alcohol as a model of harm reduction for balancing out the most stressful job in the U.S.? Well I guess it couldn’t be worse than the present harm alcohol is causing consider the facts:

Screen Shot 2012-10-12 at 3.58.11 PM“In a large sample of urban police officers, 18.1 percent of males and 15.9 percent of females reported experiencing adverse consequences from alcohol use and 7.8 percent of the sample met criteria for lifetime alcohol abuse or dependence. Female officers had patterns of alcohol use similar to male officers and substantially more than females in the general population.”
American Journal of Addiction/Jan 2011

Read: 1 in 6 police officers has a drinking problem (adverse consequences) and 1 in 12 is an alcoholic (abuse or dependence).

“Modern police culture remains insular and tight-knit, and the extent to which drinking has become ingrained in it varies from station to station, department to department. Yet empirically, police officers face heavy pressure to drink, to where non-drinking officers are often viewed as suspicious or anti-social by their colleagues.” Davey, et.al. [2001]

Officer suicide rates are at least double that of the general population.

“Studies in New York show that almost all officers are intoxicated at the time they commit suicide.”

A recent study revealed that New York City police officers kill themselves at a rate of 29 per 100,000 a year. The rate of suicide in the general population is 12 per 100,000. Most of the victims are young males with no record of misconduct, who shoot themselves while off duty.

Many police officers come from a military background with heavy drinking patterns already well established before becoming cops.

“Alcohol abuse among police officers is a serious and widespread problem, with some studies estimating that it afflicts one-quarter of all police officers in the U.S.“… and there is also a strong sub-cultural more among police officers that encourages drinking, both for social and stress-reduction purposes.”

“A recent survey of police officers found that nearly 25 percent reported drinking in order to ‘be part of the team,’ while 25 percent reported that they were negatively affected by a co-worker’s drinking.”

“They have a high divorce rate, about second in the nation. They are problem drinkers about twice as often as the general population.”

Alcohol is a very dangerous, addictive drug which causes aggressiveness in some individuals and causes great harm to the brain and body. When taken in excess, alcohol kills brain cells, as opposed to how marijuana just spurs new brain cells to grow.

Marijuana is a nontoxic, healthy alternative, impossible to overdose on, and which prevents disease, is an antidote to stress and would be effective as a harm reduction agent.

Smoking marijuana apparently didn’t harm President Obama in any way; he indulged heavily in his late teens and early twenties, his most formative years.

You cannot commit suicide by smoking yourself to death.

The therapeutic euphoric effect produced by marijuana is the drug-induced decompression experience off-duty police are truly seeking to decrease their job-induced anxiety, from which they fail to find relief through alcohol intoxication.

Again, think of marijuana as an exit drug for police officers who abuse alcohol. Harm reduction theory would say if you can never get a group of people to stop altering their consciousness, let them use the safest substance possible.

Marijuana is not a drug of abuse; it is the reverse of that concept, a healing emotional medicine that is starting to go mainstream.

A majority of police smoked marijuana as a big part of their lives in their teens and early 20s, just the way President Obama smoked marijuana for many years before becoming President!

Smoking marijuana apparently didn’t harm President Obama in any way; he indulged heavily in his late teens and early twenties, his most formative years.

So why can’t the average police officer smoke? Am I missing something here?

Police candidates stopped smoking to get a steady full-time job with benefits; they didn’t stop because they wanted to. Economics trumped recreation, but after many years of stressful back-to-back shifts, many secretly long for the good old days!

So strange the games we play: people who love getting high arresting people who love getting high.

Apparently marijuana use doesn’t kill people… but marijuana prohibition does!

arbitrary and capricious. if you want to ban marijuana, then be consistent and ban tobacco and alcohol with it.

  • Brian Frang

I agree with all your points except one: It’s disingenuous to connect marijuana use with President Obama, regardless of his past usage, considering his hard-nosed opposition to legalization.

  • Keri-Anne

Cops maybe wouldn’t be suicidal or a bunch of drunks if they respected human rights and weren’t low iq jerks with inferiority complexes. Worst argument for legalizing pot ever……. and can we focus on industrial hemp please….. there is a real effort to save the economy and the environment…. not giving a puff of relief to men in costumes who feel guilt over their actions.
